The Young Folk Awards Weekend
Posted 16th November 2012
On discovering that we would be going to the Young Folk Awards Semi Final weekend, Ciaran and I were both massively excited! Cia had done it before with TRI, but for me it was the first time and, after only playing together as a duo for just over a year, it was something we were delighted about being asked to do.
We arrived on the Friday night and met the other acts invited to the weekend. We went and had some (delightful) food and then all ten acts had a bit of a session in the evening, followed by listening to members of Fay Hield’s Hurricane Party play some after-gig tunes, as they had been performing in the Brewery arts centre that evening.
Saturday consisted of workshops led by the excellent John Spiers and Jackie Oates, talks from organisations such as the MU and Proper Music and then the evening concert. The ten acts each played a ten minute set to a packed Brewery Arts Centre theatre, the evening being compered by Mike Harding. We played The Two Magicians followed by The New Railroad, and enjoyed the set so much. After all the acts had played everyone went on stage together with Jackie and John and played and sang collectively things we had learned in the workshops during the day.
The weekend was hugely enjoyable. We made great friends, were looked after superbly by the Smooth Operations team and had an awful lot of fun. We knew it was going to be good, but neither of us had expected quite how fun-filled and helpful it would be. Huge thanks to all who helped create such an experience; we were both on a high for a good while after!
